It is a matter of days before the Supreme Court rules on Obamacare.  To conservatives who believe it all hinges on the individual mandate – beware.
First of all, the mandate has been supported by Republicans and right-leaning organizations from Newt Gingrich to Mitt Romney to the Heritage Foundation.  Not only that, the government has proven it can mandate anything it wants.  Virtually all of us drive – and the government mandates auto insurance.  If the fact that we could NOT drive, and opt out of insurance is a major difference here, I fail to see it.  The government also mandates our participation in Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, requires young men to register for the draft, and forces us to drive on the right side of the road.  Our government, at all levels, has demonstrated that it can do pretty much what it wants.  So why this decision before the High Court should be any different remains a mystery.
