Congressman Chet Edwards: Pelosi's Choice for Vice President

by Donna Garner
July 2, 2008

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has recently stated that U. S. Rep. Chet Edwards would make a good Vice-Presidential choice for Barack Obama.  Congressman Edwards represents the Central Texas area in which we live, and I have followed his career for many years.  I have watched him campaign at home as a moderate conservative and then go back to Washington, D. C. and vote as the true liberal Democrat he really is.

Edwards was one of 166 Democrats in 2006 who voted against HR 2679, the Public Expression of Religion Act that prohibited judges from awarding taxpayer dollars to ACLU lawyers who sue groups that display any public expression of religion (e.g., the Boy Scouts).  The Constitution of the United States says, "Congress shall make no law...prohibiting the free exercise [of religion] thereof."  Congressman Edwards seems to think it is his duty to uphold "freedom FROM religion" rather than "freedom OF religion."

Rep. Chet Edwards has repeatedly portrayed himself as a man who believes in "family values" while at the same time voting consistently for Partial Birth Abortion, a procedure that sucks the brains out of a baby who is three inches away from being born.

Edwards did not just half-heartedly support partial-birth abortion; he led the fight on the House floor. I happened to be watching C-SPAN the day that he presented his rehearsed and scripted speech to influence the House to support partial-birth abortions.

Congressman Edwards voted at least five times to support this heinous procedure even when the legislative language allowed for the procedure to be performed if the mother's life is endangered (Vote 756, 11/1/1995; Vote 65, 3/20/1997; Vote 325, 7/23/1998; Vote 104, 4/5/2000; Vote 343, 7/24/2002).

These votes were cast by Edwards even after he heard the profound medical evidence against the procedure.  One of those who testified on the House floor against the inhumane procedure was Dr. Tom Coburn, a fellow Congressman and an obstetrician:  "There is no serious adverse long-term physical health consequence to the mother that can be best treated by this procedure. It does not exist, it has never existed, it will never exist. It is a falsehood, it is an untruth. Partial-birth abortion, D&E on the live baby is done for the convenience of an abortionist. It is never done for any other reason. It is done for the convenience of an abortionist...I will repeat...It never is indicated."

Rep. Edwards was unmoved by Dr. Coburn's statements and by the others who presented documented medical evidence against the procedure.  Edwards allowed himself to be controlled by politics over principle.  He decided it was more important to ingratiate himself into the good graces of his Democrat cohorts than to protect the lives of precious babies.

These votes by Rep. Chet Edwards reveal his true character and not only make him unsuitable to be our Congressman but also disqualify him from being the Vice-President of the United States.

On April 18, 2007, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 to uphold the ban on partial birth abortion.  Rep. Chet Edwards was wrong, and I am sure he hopes the public has forgotten about his dismal voting record on the issue.  We have not.
